Dischord

  • At the height of her success, alternative rock star Gypsy puts sown her violin and walks away from her career, she retreats with Lucian, her musician husband, to the desolation of Cape Cod in winter. There in Lucian s family cottage, isolated from all they worked to achieve, Lucian tries to support Gypsy in her quest from renewal and peace. Their solitude is cut short, however, when Lucian s long
Initially the release was going to be a double CD featuring one song from every band (50) on the label, but that idea grew to include a 100+ page booklet that would include photos and text about the bands and the history of the label. Later a third CD was added, this one featuring unreleased or rare material from the Dischord vaults, as well as some CD-ROM video files of archival footage of performances from some of the early bands. 73 songs from various artists including The Teen Idols, Mino! r Threat, Gray Matter, Beefeater, The Snakes, Slant 6, Shudder To Think and many more. Three standard jewel cases housed in a slip-box. 2002.Self-absorbed New Age composer Lucien (Andrew Borba) feels overshadowed by the talent and fame of his "improv" violinist wife Gypsy (Annunziata Gianzero), so she abandons her music to placate him, and together they retreat to their beach front home. Gypsy just "needs to fly again, needs to dream," like she did when her grandfather played for her as a little girl. Meanwhile Lucien's serial killer brother Jimmy (Thomas Jay Ryan) comes to visit after a long absence. The three walk on the beach, drink, and talk about their pasts. Gypsy listens to wind chimes and confides in a mysterious beachcomber; Lucien grows frustrated composing his next album, and Jimmy drowns the local women. Meanwhile a retired Boston detective is on Jimmy's trail, and eventually explosive confrontations erupt on both artistic and psychological levels. DISCHORD i! s a unique, low-budget indie from writer-producer-director-edi! tor Mark Wilkinson. It seems to take place in an alternative New Age universe where even cops and Cape Cod fisherman talk about appeasing the spirits and New Age music is more popular than rock and rap combined. Naturally there's an intriguing score, and Hal Hartley fans will relish seeing HENRY FOOL star Ryan in another meaty role.

Genre: Feature Film-Action/Adventure
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 3-FEB-2004
Media Type: DVDDespite critical roasting and a blink-and-you-missed it theatrical release, Half Past Dead is surprisingly not half bad. Once you recognize this bastard child's recent action-flick heritage (The Rock being the most obvious of a dozen pilfered plot lines), you can kick back and enjoy the unexpected perks that arise when a deep-c! over FBI sleuth (Steven Seagal) accompanies a convicted crook (rapper Ja Rule) into "New Alcatraz" prison. A death-row killer (Bruce Weitz) sits on a $200 million goldmine, keeping his secret as a bargaining chip when criminal commandos (led by the ever-cool Morris Chestnut) drop in for a lethally greedy raid. After cutting his teeth on trashy, short-lived TV series, director Don Michael Paul can't do much to help the puffy, career-tanking Seagal, but he's got lively allies in Ja Rule and alleged "has-been" Nia Peeples (forget Lara Croft, this babe rocks), and even legendary action-TV producer Stephen J. Cannell drops in for a cameo. Derivative from the get-go, but fun just the same. --Jeff ShannonWelcome to Alcatraz. Dorothy Parker meets Agatha Christie.

"Chick-lit noir with a side of funny." - Ruth Harris, NYT best-selling author of "Modern Women" and "Husbands and Lovers".

"Chick-lit for brunettes." - Saffina Desforges, Kindle UK best-selling author of "Sugar & Spice" and the "Rose Red" crime thriller series.

The writers’ conference is a mostly American phenomenon. It’s usually a combination of bucolic holiday and intensive writing course, where aspiring writers can hone their craft, learn the ins and outs of the publishing business and network with other writers at all stages of their careers.

Ghostwriters In The Sky is set at one such conferenceâ€"held at a picturesque former “dude ranch” in California’s idyllic wine-and-cattle country north of Los Ange! lesâ€"an area that has long been a retreat for Hollywood celebrities, from President Ronald Reagan to pop star Michael Jackson.

No pop-stars or presidents here, but enough mystery and bizarre goings-on to make Michael Jackson's life look tame.

Grab yourself a glass of wine, a box of chocolates and a comfy sofa, and enjoy.

When a gifted ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is hired to write the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), he quickly finds himself trapped in a web of political and sexual intrigue. Lang is implicated in a scandal over his administration's harsh tactics, and as the ghostwriter digs into the politician's past, he discovers secrets that threaten to jeopardize international relations forever. Co-starring Olivia Williams and Kim Cattrall, it is a taut and shocking thriller from acclaimed direct! or Roman Polanski (The Pianist).

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanksi (The Pianist) teams up with author-screenwriter Robert Harris (Enigma) for this twisty political thriller. Ewan McGregor plays an unnamed ghostwriter who signs on to pen the memoirs of former British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). The money is good, but there's a catch: the ghost's predecessor perished under mysterious circumstances (his body washed up on the shore in an apparent suicide). Being the adventurous sort, the ghost puts that information aside and travels to Lang's austere compound on Martha's Vineyard, where he meets Lang's efficient personal secretary, Amelia (Kim Cattrall, good but for an inconsistent accent), and acerbic wife, Ruth (An Education's Olivia Williams). Just as he's wading through Lang's dull text, the PM's ex-cabinet minister accuses him of handing over suspected terrorists to the CIA, fully aware that torture would be on the agenda.! The next thing the ghost knows, he's working for a possible w! ar crimi nal, and the deeper he digs, the more convinced he becomes that Lang is lying about his past. After exchanging a few words with a sharp-eyed old man (Eli Wallach) and a tight-lipped professor (Tom Wilkinson), he realizes his life may also be at risk. Then, while Lang hits the road to proclaim his innocence, the ghost gets to know Ruth better--much better. If the conclusion feels a little glib, Polanksi tightens the screws with skill, McGregor enjoys his best role in years, and Williams proves she's fully prepared to carry a movie of her own. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

From the director of the ground-breaking film I, Robot comes this hip, sexy comedy about a garage band with everything it takes to make it to the top?except talent. Waiting for their big break, a group of young rockers and their clueless manager can't keep their heads on straight -- or their hands off each other. Loaded with sex, drugs and rock-n-roll, GARAGE DAYS proves you don?t have to be a rock star to party like one!Alex Proyas, director of sci-fi dramas Dark City and I, Robot, took a detour toward a modified retro-'60s, upbeat rock & roll comedy with 2002's lightly engaging Garage Days. Set in a Sydney, Australia suburb, the film is a quirky variation on the story of a misfit band trying to get a break with successful managers, clubs, recording studios, lovers, etc. Singer-guitarist Freddy (Kick Gurry) desperately maneuvers his group toward stardom, but his bandmates' internal struggles and the capriciousness of a powerful record executive (Marton Csokas) prove major stumbling blocks. So, too, is Freddy's deepening attraction to Kate (Maya Stange), girlfriend of his lead guitarist Joe (Brett Stiller), who in turn may be having a nervous breakdown via a dangerous side romance with a suicidal beauty (Yvette Duncan). Proyas enjoys his patches of darkness in Garage Days, but for the most part he's making his own, devil-may-care A Hard Day's Night. --Tom KeoghOur house was very popular last Saturday.
